Me on Food: My "hero", The Weston Price Foundation is an organization that supports “real” unprocessed foods. Raw, Grass-fed, and Organic are all key adjectives when talking about what kinds of food we need to be eating. My whole life I accepted that things like egg substitutes, skim milk, grocery store meat and produce, canned sauces and fruits, cereals, and low-fat, or sugar free “anything” are all the norm, and what we should be eating. If the box says “natural” it means its healthy, right? Well, I started to doubt our typical diet and decided to take Weston Price’s advice and change, well…….everything. I started to buy local grass-fed meats and eggs, full fat raw milk, and lots of organic produce . We ate rich, organic, and raw…. and it was delicious! The only problem was after a few months I realized that I had gained weight and I really didn’t feel any better than I did before. Well, the obvious took me a while to actually realize…. Yes, I added these foods in, but I did not take the processed foods out. I would down a few Oreo’s (with my raw milk). Or have a big bowl of Breyer’s Ice Cream (with organic raspberries). Processed food was still a huge part of my life! So, my first attempt at eating healthy was a big fail. But now I knew what I was doing wrong. My new goal: No processed food and limited flour and sugar. So once again, we ate rich, delicious and healthy, but this time everything was homemade, with good quality, natural ingredients. Our kitchen was free from most boxes, cans, and pretty much most things that you would find at a grocery store. Instead we filled it with fresh meat, dairy, produce, and natural grains. And to my surprise, not only did I start to feel wonderful, have more energy, feel more happy, but I lost about 10 pounds. I was actually eating more to keep weight on! Today, our main motto in our house is “if we want it… we have to make it”. If we are craving Oreo’s, well, we will find a good recipe online and then modify it a bit to fit our way of natural eating…. same goes for crackers, cereal, granola bars, tortilla shells, etc. Pretty much anything is fair game just as long as we are using good, natural, high quality ingredients and of course avoiding refined sugars and anything pre-packaged. (With as much as we cook together, I think my 2 year old could hold his own on Bobby Flay’s Throwdown :) _____________________________________ Me on Natural Living: So now we are eating right and feeling great, but right along with eating healthy I also felt such a need to live healthy. And once again I spent countless hours reading and researching and I ended up being flabbergasted. How could so many toxic, cancer-causing, products be on the market today?? From shampoo’s, to laundry soap, to even home fragrances. I desperately wanted to live a healthy, natural, non-toxic life, not so much for me, but for my babies and my future babies. They were my motivation. I had a lot of guess, test, and revise moments because sometimes the “natural approach” does not always work very well. But today, our home is only filled with simple, pure, and safe cleaning supplies and beauty products and I am TRILLED with how well they work! _________________________________________________ Me on Children: Little Boys! I have the most precious little boys . Our first darling son, and secretly our favorite, (shhh don’t tell the other three) was needed in Heaven before he was born. Since then, our home has been filled with the beautiful (and constant) chatter of my 3 year old, the goofy antics of my 2 year old, and the coo’s and cry’s of my little newborn. They are all my buddies and my little helpers every day. I am blessed beyond belief that I get to stay home with them, and that me and my husband get to be the main figures shaping their lives. Its hard work, very very very hard work! But I try as best as I can to keep our home happy, peaceful, and fun. I make tons of mistakes, frustrations happen, and tempers are sometimes lost, but I truly never take one minute for granted…. middle of the night feedings, the spit up, and the tantrums, bring it on…..I love it all!!! So this is what makes up the Fresh Idea Mama…. I really hope you enjoy reading! |
