It’s almost Halloween…. let the horror movie marathons begin! This year (actually every year) we are on a pretty tight budget, so spending money on Halloween decorations means dipping into our food or gas money, which would not be a smart idea. So I have been trying to find some cute, modern, and somewhat easy decorating ideas using materials I already have at home.
This is my favorite one so far.
I saw an idea of painting glass mason jars and making scary faces on them here, but I did not want to ruin all of our jars with paint.
I also liked a Martha Stewart idea of using tissue paper for illuminating mason jar’s with candles inside, here……
Anyway, here is my take on a mixture of the two ideas.
*Note, I was trying to make these while entertaining a 2 ½ year old and a 1 year old, so they are not my best, they would looks so much better if I did them with care…..but they are still super cute!
Items you will need:
Glass Jars of any size
Tissue Paper (I used white because that is what I had. But feel free to be creative)
Votive Candles
Tape, Permanent Marker, and Scissors
Martha Stewarts Directions: (Use this for the best results)
1. Cut a sheet of tissue paper in half crosswise (depending on size of jar you are using). Lay flat on a work surface, and make a 1- to 2-inch fold on the bottom of one piece
2. Make a larger fold in another piece, and fit it into the fold of the first piece of paper. Repeat process with remaining pieces of paper, making some folds thinner and some wider.
3. Wrap around hurricane glasses, and then secure with tape. Place a small votive candle in each. Be sure wick is cut short and doesn’t come in contact with the paper.
My “quicker” directions: (use this if you have little kiddo’s trying to “help”)
1. Cut a long sheet of tissue paper (depending on the size of the jar) . Make a 1-2 inch fold on the top and bottom.
2. Wrap the tissue paper around the jar and secure with tape. I double wrapped it. You do not want it too thin or it looks cheap, and you do not want it too thick or it will not let out enough “glow”. Also, I liked to keep about an inch of the paper above the top of the jar, it looked nicer this way.
3. Using a permanent marker, make spooky faces. Then place a votive inside making sure the wick does not come in contact with the paper.
