Homemade deodorant and homemade toothpaste are the two things I told myself I would never start using. I am all about being natural, but my husband has a fear of me becoming Amazon woman, so I have to set limits.
Although, my breaking point came a few months ago when a few girls I know raved on how great this 3 ingredient deodorant actually is. So of course I just had to try it. It costs next to nothing, takes about 2 minutes, and is so natural, it is actually edible……so, why not?
Well, the big question, does it work? Lets just say my previous (expensive) bottle of special aluminum-free deodorant has not been used in months. This homemade stuff is awesome!
It works so well because the coconut oil has natural antibacterial properties, and the cornstarch and baking soda work great as a natural antiperspirant.
The true test came when I finally (painstakingly) convinced my husband to try it out for a weekend. He agreed and even wore it during a 2 hour game of basketball. The end result.... well, even lthough he hated to admit it, he said it worked just as good, if not better than his trusty (cancer-causing, chemical-filled, and over-priced) Old Spice. Win one for the wife!
So here ya go. This is the general recipe. You can experiment with different essential oils. Tea tree oil is a popular due to its antibacterial properties. Although, if you have sensitive skin you may want to leave these oils out altogether. Also you can choose to store this in a jar and apply with your fingers or mold it into an old deodorant stick, which ever you find easier. (I personally like to put it in a jar)
*UPDATE: It has now been over a month that my husband has been using this, and he actually admitted that he does not want to go back to store bought ever again because this works so well!
Ingredients:
¼ cup baking soda
¼ cup organic cornstarch (organic will be non-GMO)
5 tablespoons coconut oil
A few drops of an essential oil of your choice (optional)
Directions:
Make sure you coconut oil is soft, warm if necessary. Mix all ingredients together and mold it into an old, cleaned deodorant stick or clean jar. Ta Da! To use this, slowly swipe a small amount of the deodorant under your arms. I personally prefer to keep this deodorant in a little jar and just apply it with my fingers.
*Note: if your coconut oil is pure liquid and the deodorant is too thin, stick it in the fridge for a few minutes to solidify.
