Many people these days are realizing that juice is not all what it is hyped up to be. It is so silly when I see commercials or advertisements where there is a beautiful perfect orchard and someone picks an orange – sticks a straw in it – and goes on to claim that their carton of OJ is the exact same thing.

Yes, this is silliness.

Many of us know that today's juice is usually too high in sugar, it has been treated and processed, and many valuable nutrients have been lost.

But this post is about things you may not have known about today's orange juice and once again, more reasons why we are best off avoiding anything processed, pre-packaged, and chemically treated........

A typical orange juice factory today is totally automated. Massive amounts of whole oranges are put into the “squeezing” machines with added enzymes to extract the most oil out of the skins. The problem is, these oranges are heavily treated with pesticides, usually cholinesterase inhibitors, which are real neurotoxins. By not peeling the orange first, all of these toxins are getting into the juice.

Interesting side note: The left over filtered orange peel used to be fed to cattle and was linked to mad cow disease, in which these neuro-toxins promoted degeneration of the brain and nervous system in the cow. A study carried out in Hawaii found that consumption of fruit and fruit juices was the number one dietary factor for the development of Alzheimer’s disease. They speculated that the real culprit was the pesticides used in fruit—and concentrated in the juices due to modern processing techniques.
Many orange juice manufacturers then use a technology known as aseptic storage. Oxygen is taken out of the squeezed juice in a process known as “daeration.” This protects the juice from oxidation, which in turn, allows the manufacturers to keep millions of gallons of juice in storage tanks for more than a year if necessary.

This process of daeration extends orange juice’s shelf life, but it also strips the juice of its natural flavor. To solve this problem, juice manufacturers hire flavor and fragrance companies to artificially engineer flavor packs help make the juice taste…. well, like fresh orange juice. (These flavor packs are not required to be on the ingredient list.)  The problem with these flavor packs is that most of them are chemically altered using ethyl butyrate — a compound that is also added to perfume

So with all these factors, not to mention the sugar content, I would highly recommend staying away from processed juices, even if they say “organic”. In my opinion, they are a waste of money and have very little, and even somewhat detrimental effects on your health.

We usually stick to water, but it's always fun to squeeze our own juice, make fruit smoothies in the blender, and occasionally enjoy some home "brewed" water kefir.
